High Memory Usage on Orion Server

I have been reading through some info on reported memory utilization, but what Orion is reporting on it's own hardware seems to be accurate, but high. Orion (SL250) is running on a Dell Poweredge 860 (Dual Core Xeon 2.66 GHZ, 1066 MHz FSB), with 4 GB of memory, running Server 2003 SP2, with the pagefile set to ~6 GB (?). When opening up Windows' Task Manager the Pagefile usage shows a pretty consistent 3.6 GB (Task Manager also shows 2 instances of sqlsrvr.exe using 1.50 GB and 1.1.69 GB). The Orion stats show Physical Memory 3.7 GB used and Virtual Memory 3.6 GB used. It doesn't look like these values change much throughout the days...

Any help or ideas is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If your running SQL Server 2000/2005 having two instances of sqlservr.exe = bad

What version of SQL server are you running?

Oh, good. haha Turns out I am running 2005 Standard.

Was SQL express ever on this server? If it was, you may want to check if it was it removed properly?

Or you may have two different 2005 SQL servers running, check services and see if there are two

SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)

Nope, this one had Standard on it from the start. Is there a way to figure out which instance Orion is using and try to shut down the other?

problem here is that you only have 4Gig of memory.

Windows is a hog and takes about 2Gig to run and SQL is a hog and takes a minimum of 2Gig to run also.

if you want better performance and to see this issue go away step up to 16Gig of memory.

then Windows will spread out to roughly 2.x Gig and SQL will spread out some more and settle in at rougly 4Gig constant use for a single database.

8Gig will probably make due but i always like to give monster apps like this some space and if you are running Orion on same box then definatly go for the 16Gig you will not regret it.

Hmmm.... interesting. I would have no problem adding a lot of memory to this server. I think I'll work on that as well.

You'll need to upgrade your OS to Enterprise to get more than 4GB ram also if you dont run 64 bit you'll need /PAE and AWE for SQL. I still think you've got two instances of SQL running and thats what's stealing memory.

This server has Enterprise on it, 32 bit - looks like the main board will only support a max of 8 GB of ram. I will find some. I'm not sure about PAE and AWE - what are they? I will do some research later today. Thanks.
