i understand that advanced alerts are handled by the primary poller, but how do I do basic alerting on an additional poller? Do I need to copy all my basic alerts to it? How is that done? Documentation?
Hi Freeman--
Is there a specific reason you need to run basic alerts? SW recommends creating advanced alerts.
Here are two sources on alerts. The first one is the SolarWinds Orion Network Administrator Guide. Look at Chapter 12 to configure basic alerts.
The second is a SolarWinds Technical Reference - Understanding Advanced Alerts, which provides information on the power and flexibility of advanced alerts.

Is it possible to configure advanced alerts to run on an additional poller? I would be interested in this to that if our core engine experiences a problem, then we will still be able to send out alerts on the nodes that are still being polled.
I believe this could be done.
I would like you to explain the advanced alert which you want to run on an additional poller in detail.I would be able to help with the sql query to achieve it.
To create a basic alert on an additional poller, you need to open up System manager on the additional poller, and create the basic alert from there. Basic alerts are poller-dependent, so when you create an alert on one poller, it can only alert on the devices assigned to that polling engine.
For a multi-poller environment, we suggest using Advanced alerts instead, as these are not poller dependent. When you create an Advanced alert, it will be able to alert for any alert objects, regardless of what poller they are assigned to.
This also makes it easier for you if you ever need to balance your nodes between pollers - moving them from one polling engine to another. If you move devices from one polling engine to another, you also would need to reconfigure your basic alerts on those engines, whereas your advanced alerts would continue to work as before without any changes necessary.
We've also got a video training session available for Advanced alerts: http://www.solarwinds.com/resources/webinars/CustomerTraining/Orion/NPM/Advanced-Alerting/
