How to suppress performance counter alerts when alert trigger on application

Hi,

I have 2 questions related to alert notifications.

Question 1:

What do I lose if I only enable 'Alert on components ... ' versus 'Alert on application....' ? Seems the rule 'Alert on application...' is going to fire off anyway if a component is triggered. Do I need both sets of alerts?

Question 2:

There is an out-of-box alert rule 'Alert me when an application goes into critical state'. The rule has trigger on application. I do not want to trigger email alert when the component issue is a performance counter. I can't find a way to set the rules to ignore just performance counters. So I have to specify every single one in the rule but it is not going to be manageable over time as we add application to the mix.

Here is how I set it up now - A section for each application (Windows Server, SQL Server, etc).

If you set the trigger on components, then you have an option to filter on component type (Type 37 is performance counters). But that would make the rule to be similar to the 'Alert of components ...'. Anyone knows a better way when triggering on application?

If you don't want to alert on the Performance counters just change the statistic thresholds (or clear) on the monitor either in the template or override at the node. It will continue to log the performance counter data for charting and review but the component will always be in an UP state when the node is up etc.

This is a great. However, the warning/critical icon will never be triggered on the console. Someone watching the console will not notice there is a concern. This is my understanding on these settings. Correct me if this is not the case. Thanks!

You are correct jkcy in that nulling out the threshold will keep the component from displaying a warning/critical status on the web console. What I typically do is only set my alerts to alert when a component\application is Down or Critical, I don't ever alert on Warnings. So, if you do the same then you can still set Warning thresholds for your Performance counters and have them show up as yellow in the console but you won't get an alert on them unless you set a critical threshold.
