DNS lookup macro.. Alerting

Hi,
Another fun issue.

When I send email alerts I reference ${IPAddress}. I know I could use ${NodeName} but ${NodeName} doesnt always match what is in DNS, and therefore may not be what the NOC folks "know" the machine as.

Does anyone know a way to have a DNS lookup done?

I am thinking that I am going to end up writting code that does the DNS lookup and feeds the DNS name into ${NodeName} or into a new Field in the Netperfmon database.

Any thoughts?

Ross,

The ${NodeName} is the "Caption" of the device that can be changed with the Orion System Manager.

There is a ${DNS} value which is determined by reverse lookup during discovery or there is ${SysName} which is the snmp configured system name or hostname.

My suggestion is to configure the system name on your devices and use that in your alerts.

This assumes that you have a naming convention for your network devices. Additionally, if you use the system name for DNS entries, everything should work as expected.

Thanks for the info.
I now see the Reverse DNS field.
How can I get them to populate?

I tried "Rediscover" but that didnt repopulate the field.

Hey Ross,

Have you tried doing an NSlookup from the Orion server command prompt to ensure the DNS reverse entries are resolvable?
