Is there a way to setup a backup email server for alerts? I can do it in LANsurveyor but not in Alerts. Thanks in advance.
The workaround I'm using is to create another set of alerts using the backup SMTP server. The alert is suppressed while the main SMTP server is not down. I find it preferable if SolarWinds can just add a backup SMTP server like in LANsurveyor.
I have all my alerts set to use a mailserver of "mailserver.set.by.local.hosts.file", with a corresponding entry in the (duuuh) local hosts file.
I change the hosts file manually when required, but you could have another alert with an action to swap over the hosts file to one pointing to another mail server when the primary mail server stops responding. However, if it's still responding but just not forwarding mail, then that's a problem which needs dealing with in a different manner, for example setting up an OS event monitor to switch hosts file when an appropriate event from the AlertingEngine source within SolarWinds.Net is found.
