Monitor temperature of server/network device and configuring alerts for the same

Hi all,

Is it possible to monitor the temperature of my network and server device using SolarWinds NPM monitoring tool. Or will it be better going for SAM monitoring tool.

Also I would like to know if i will be able to configure alerts for the same, so that if the temperature of server/network crosses the threshold then alert will be send across.

You need to create an Universal Device Poller and use that with your devices. Then you are able to monitor the temperature and use it for alerting. For HP switches, the chassis temperature is OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.99.1.1.1.4.11.

SAM will provide all the information you're looking for on your Dell PowerEdge servers. Here is such an example. NPM would be the appropriate product for monitoring the health and status of your Dell PowerConnect network equipment. The full extent of information available varies quite significantly depending upon the devices capabilities but here is one such example of what that looks link in NPM.

The devices for which i need to check the hardware health and temperature status are mentioned below. It would be great if you can update me if these devices I will be able to do the same.

Servers:

IBM System X3650 M3 Server

IBM System X3250 M4 Server

Firewall:

ASA 5540

ASA 5520

Air Condition Unit:

Stulz WIB 8000 v1.32 (This AC unit can be polled using SNMP v1)

SAM will monitor the health state of your IBM X-Series servers and NPM should be able to provide the health status of your ASA firewalls. For the Stulz AC unit you will need to create a Universal Device Poller to collect this information as Vieregg suggests.

I have found that for DELL PowerConnect devices out of the box there are very little hardware health monitors

Custom Pollers are required
