Creating Node Groups

Ok, my company just purchased Orion so I'm new. I've browsed the forums to find help, but due to my lack of new terminology I seem to be having problems finding what I'm looking for.

Basically I want to create custom groups for nodes so that we can separate devices into specific groups. A screen w/ ~300 devices gets a bit difficult to maintain. Is it possible to create custom groups for devices to be placed under? If so, what's the easiest way to go about this?

Again, I apologize if the answer to this question is staring me in the face somewhere here in the forums.

David, it sounds like you want to create a map for every group of nodes that you define and then create a master map with the individual maps on it for drill down. So you if you have 5 groups of nodes then create 5 maps. Then create a master map and drag the 5 maps onto it. They will display as green (assuming all nodes are up) icons on the master map. if a node goes down within a single map then that icon turns yellow and you know to drill down and look at it.

Like Mark mentioned that is a good start to making some custom groups. Another approach my company took was to do the following.

1. Create a Custom Property that described business unit and device type
2. Set the custom property per device to its associated business unit
3. Used the All Nodes - AJAX resource and then grouped by business unit and then device type. This gave us a drill down unit by business unit then device type. So if I wanted to see a router from unit x, I would click on the X business unit then on routers and see a list of all routers in business unit x. There are lots of posts in thee forum explaining more on both custom properties and the All Nodes AJAX resource.

You will find that the Orion is EXTREMELY customizable. My suggestion is to subscribe to the ORION forum so any posts about Orion get sent to your email. I did this when I was new with the tool and it helped a lot. It will be a lot of email but skimming through them you will learn about many of the nice features and abilities.
