Monitoring Websites from the Outside

Hi guys,

I'd like to know what the proper practice is to have APM monitor my websites from the outside. Currently we host several websites, all of which are monitored internally by APM. Well, what if (and it has happened) if our external users can't get to the site, but the internal users can. APM shows all green and happy, and external users are definitely not very happy.

Is there a preferred practice (if at all possible) to put an APM monitor on the outside and report back to our internal Orion server? How do you guys do it?

Currently, it's not possible. In a future release, we do plan to support a remote APM poller that would give you that kind of data.

The one workaround I can think of is to set up or rent a web proxy server that is outside of your corporate network.

If you then create an Orion APM HTTP/HTTPS component monitor to request a page from the web proxy, the web proxy should retrieve the page using the outside network.

There is two options in the HTTP and HTTPS component monitors you have to set for this to work: Use Proxy, and Proxy Address.

If you have a poller at an external site, and it has a VPN connection to the "inside", it should be able to monitor the website and communicate with the solarwinds DB. You just need to make sure that the second poller uses an external route to get to the website, rather than an internal one through the VPN.
