Feature Request... Backup Interfaces
skrause
It would be nice if we could flag a given interface as a "backup", meaning that it's normal state is down and up is the exception. We use Orion to monitor around 350 WAN routers, most of which have an ISDN backup circuit provisioned. Right now we have to keep a parallel system up for monitoring these since if we monitored them within Orion every device would have one perpetually down interface.

you could use the alarm suppression feature to accomplish this.

I don't need to set up any alerts for the BRI interfaces, I just want to be able to monitor them. I don't think the alert suppression affects the "group status".
The problem is if I begin monitoring a router's BRI interface, which is normally down, then the node's group status becomes "up-down" which shows up on the web site as a big green dot with a flashing red dot in the corner indicating one of the interfaces is down. If I do that on all of the routers then all the nodes are perpetually "up-down" and I can't look at the web site any more to see which nodes are having real problems (the frame-relay interface is down) and which are normal (only the BRI is down)
Flagging an interface as "backup" would, ideally, stop that interface from being counted when computing the node's group status

Steve,
Here's a possible workaround until this feature gets implemented;
You could create a map with all normally up interfaces, using
a %100 Threshold. Any down interface would cause the map icon
to flash red.
Conversely, you could create a map with all normally down -
backup interfaces, using a %1 Threshold. If the Icon status
goes green, then you have a backup interface which is turned up.
Then just create a master map with icons of these other maps.
If you use Visio to create the map JPG/GIF you can get creative
and use boxes with descriptions for each map & drag the map icons
into these boxes. That's if you don't want to use actual drawings
or maps.

Hello Steve,
what about to combine both: the surpression because the normal stat is down and the map feature by leaving the BRIs away ?
We did want to see a map status going to yellow or red as soon as any interface goes down, so all the interfaces are placed on the map for Germany, but in a hidden way. If you see the web page you see only the sites. You can do this by drag and drop the interfaces of all desired routers to the grey area beside your map in the map maker tool. Tey will not be visible to the customer.
hope that this may help in anyway,
Ralf
