Service monitoring without snmp

Hi, I'm trying a demo version of Orion and I would like to know if is possibile to monitor default services such as http, dns, etc.. without using snmp mibs. Actually I use nagios, an open source software, that allow to monitor any tcp port in a simple way (doing a telnet on any port). I need to know if this is possible because I would use Orion to have traffic statistics together with service monitoring (I need to monitor web services of my clients).
