NCM integration with NPM

Hello all,

I apologize in advance if this is a silly or simple question but I'm on a very tight time constraint and I have little to no experience with NPM and no experience with NCM as of yet.

My situation is this... We are building a stand-alone, federally compliant network that must have NCM in place in a couple of weeks so that auditors can come down and view our procedures, infrastructure, etc to make sure we are secure and capable to do business. We'd like to integrate NCM with NPM but currently, NPM is in use and will not be moved to the new network until later down the road. The way I have read some of the documenation is that you can only integrate NCM at the very start by installing it first on the NPM server and then on it's own server. Is this correct? Is there not a way to integrate the two sometime down the road without blowing NCM away and starting from scratch?

Hi Keith,

Technically it is possible to do this however there are a few things to note.

The main issue will be that you will have two Orion Core Databases for the period of time before you integrate, one for your NPM and one for NCM and will lose some polling history, and Orion platform settings when you make the move.

First step of the move would be uninstalling the NCM web site from the NCM server and installing it on the NPM server. Also the NCM license will have to be deactivated on the NCM server and reactivated on the NPM server where the NCM website gets installed.

To link to your existing NPM you will have to rerun the Orion and NCM configuration wizards on the NCM server to point at the other Orion database for your NPM. The databases will then synchronize to each other but you will lose any history in your old Orion database ( One previously used by NCM) as it will no longer be needed. This data may not be relevant though for you as it is the polling / alerting history ect. not related to NCM specifically. The NCM configs\ inventory data will all be in the NCM database not the Orion database so they will be preserved. You will also now be using accounts and server settings from the NPM Orion vs the NCM so there may be some tweaking to do.

Your other option which is even easier is to deactivate/uninstall NCM and install it on the same sever as NPM. When prompted for the databases you can choose to use the NCM database you were previously using and choose the Orion database for NPM. You may need to copy your jobs to the new server but that is fairly straight forward and documented as a KB.

These steps are off the top of my head so there may be something I missing but wanted to let you know you will have options. I'll see what I can do about getting these steps validated and documented.

I think that is right; you can not integrate later (yet, feature request?) if you use NCM 7.0, but if you get NCM 6.1, then you could do it later (by upgrading to 7.0), but 7.0 looks like it has a lot of neat features (which you might not even have a chance to look at it you are time strained). But 6.1 might get you what the auditors want and work "for now".

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, our license is for NCM 7.0 so it looks like I may have to build it as stand alone for now, blow it away later when we are ready to integrate and then build it again. At least I'll have some experience installing it by then!
