Why do bulk adds under Network Discovery use hosts files to get IP Address but noy use hostname for Node Addition

Hi Guys,

so here is my question, I have a complete hosts file on my Orion NPM box. if I add a single node,  I add via its hostname and when the node get added, its added via its hostname.

When I do a network discovery using the "Bulk Load" I add a list of hostnames, these get resolved correctly and the nodes are discovered, but when they get imported into NPM they go in as the IP addresses not the hostnames. How can I alter this behaviour so that I get my hostnames in NPM and not a list of IP addresses

Hi Debbi

1. Bulk list: Orion takes the list of hostnames , resolves them into IPs and adds them as IPs only, so hostnames are gone and IPs would have to be manually edited to change them to the host name in Orion.

2.Discovery via icmp-only produces IPs only in Orion, because reverse DNS is not used in discovery.

3.Discovery when a node can be accessed via snmp produces entries with hostnames.

4. Manually entering a node one at a time using hostname allows the hostnames to be stored in Orion.

5. So there is no way to bulk-add or discover icmp-only nodes and have the hostname appear in Orion without later manually editing.

Is this a correct assessment?

I believe you are correct on all of these except #1. I was able to do this. Try doing it again with a hostname that you know is on your network.

I do want to hear from the product manager on this for final say.
