Monitor folder modified date

Hi All,

just trying to find out if it is possible to monitor the last time a folder was modified and alert if over a time period ?

The reason for this is that we have a folder that has a file placed in it from one system and then pulled from it from another, I need to be able to alert if the folder has not been modified within 2 hours.

Hi hansons, how did you get on? I've tested both option 1 and option 2 every way I can think and it works every time. Under the components summary does the statistc change colour or does it remain black (see screenshot below)? One thing to note is that I set the template to poll only every hour by default so you might need to force a poll to get a down result (it will still take a few minutes after forcing a poll to get a result).

(nb. the latestfile and oldest file stats are being converted from raw date format to byte format in this view, the true values still work in alerts).

I don't believe there is a way to monitor a folder modified date.

You can however check the date on a file and see if it is older than 2 hours.

File Age Monitor

The statistic is the amount of hours so yours would be 2 in this case.

Thanks for the quick reply unfortunately I have already come across the File Age Monitor however as a general the folder will be empty, its only really used as a place holder as the files pass from one system to another

This is something that you can achieve using the Powershell component in SAM, you just need to find the PS script:

You can do this with a template I posted a while back: Folder Statistics. Once applied you will just need to setup an alert to fire if last date recorded was over 2 hours old.

nb. You could easily tweak the temlate to look for only the last modified time of the directory itself rather than it's content if you felt that would give you better results.

FYI: I've just updated the Folder Statistics template to include an additional component to list how many seconds have passed since the folder specified was modified. Just create an alert to look for this component reading anything over 7200 (2 hours).

There are 2 options, the easist is to simply set the parentAge component to go critical when over 7200 for one poll. The other way is to create an alert specifically which you could add automated emails, syslog entries etc.

Create an alert with the following trigger condition something like the following:

nb. I just made a minor change to the template so that it also shows the full last modified date and time in the message field so you might want to download the template again.
