Can an Application be in Warning/Critical?

I see that there are advanced alerts for Components being in Warning or Critical state. That one is based on the thresholds that can be defined inside the application at the component level. However, I don't understand how there can be an alert for an Application being in Warning or Critical state. I thought an Application can only be Up or Down.

Am I wrong?

Applications can be up/down/warning/critical based upon the status of the component monitors within the application.

An application will be the worst status of any component. so if a component becomes critical the application also becomes critical.

Thanks alterego. So, would'nt the alerts for application going warning/critical and component going warning/critical be redundant? Seems like one could always use just the application alert and embed SQL variables identifying the component(s) that are responsible for the application status.

Correct. You only need to alert on Application or Component monitor. Not both. Which you choose is dependant upon the level of specificity you require.
