Current Hardware Health tells me 5 disks are in "Major Failure (Assert)

I have an ESXi 5.5 Dell server that appears to be running fine. Last Wednesday, suddenly, 5 disks in the array are indicating Major Failure (Assert).  My question is, what does this mean and what can cause it?  I know disks can die and this major failure would normally indicate that, but I can't imagine how 5 disks all of a sudden go bad at the same time.

SAM is just pulling that from VMware. If you log into vSphere and look at the hardware on that ESX host it is probably saying the same thing.
