Alert action

Hi,

I am new to SolarWinds products, so I am still learning, plus not much experience with VB scripts. I have an issue with some of the nodes I monitor where the VPN goes into "sleep mode" and the pings no longer show an up status, but if I launch a telnet session, the status will come back up. The idea I have is to have an alert action that will telnet to one of these nodes and then disconnect. No need to actually login, just some traffic to "wake up" the connection. Right now I have an alert set to email me if the sites have been down for more than an hour. I would like to have an alert action that would "wake up" these particular sites, and have it check every 45 minutes or something so that as long as it "wakes up" I will not get a down status email. Does anyone have a VB script that can do this, or does anyone know of a better way of doing this?

Not too sure about the workaround in Solarwinds, but as for the root cause:

This IPSec Tunnel might just be running into it's session lifetime and disconnecting. I have run into this before where because I hadn't explicitly defined ICMP traffic as interesting traffic, the VPN tunnel would timeout and it would take some type of TCP or UDP traffic (Telnet, HTTP, SNMP) to re-engage it.

Just throwing this out there, as specifying ICMP protocol traffic as interesting would theoretically keep the tunnel up at all times provided that your polling interval is less
than the tunnel timeout.

Thanks for the reply Chris. What you are saying makes sense, and is probably what is causing the issue. My problem is that another entity controls the WAN links and VPN's at these particular sites, so it will be up to them to make that change. I have sent a request for them to look at it.
