Is there an easy to monitor global SQL lock count and alert on a threshold

A month or two back we had our SQL instance hang with 90,000 locks. Wer had a process that could not be killed to release them so we had to bounce SQL. Our normal trandline is around 250 locks.

What I would like to do is to have a threshhold that I could alert on. We have a stored procedure we use to manually look at this once in a while but I would like to trend this over time and set a threshold for alerts.

We have NPM,APM, and Netflow but I suspect that APM is where I would do this.

I agree, APM is probably where you would do this.

It includes a PERFMON monitor. If you can get to that same object using the typical OS 'PerfMon' app then you can with APM also.

Just set up APM with the value you want and build an alert around that APM Component.

You may also want to consider using the SQL Query monitor to run the query on the DB server and monitor the count that way.

OK I had a stored procedure spshowlocks wih a flag that returns a count of locks. Does that answer from the query get used on the statistics data in the monitor. I set no thresholds on response time but set the warning at 500 and the critical at 5000 assuming that if I went over 500 locks or 5000 locks respectively the status would change for the app. Am I thinking about this correctly? Does the result of the query get used in the statistics data?

Your query should return the lock count as a result (singular value). This would be used as the stats value for the monitor which you can use to put thresholds on as you described.
