Using Variables in Custom Property fields

Hello All

Due to the wide variation of Vendors we are managing for one customer. I have had to create several Custom Properties in order for Reporting to come out showing usable information.

For example -- I created a customer property called 'Firmware' where I would like to pull information from the database and fill in the Version number only. The table pulled from would be different for a couple of Vendor devices because these vendors chose to put proprietary data in different, non-standard tables.

The big question is...Can I use some of the built in Node Variables to pull that data and fill in the fields?

Next question ... Can I use SQL Statement based variable to pull data from non-standard tables and fill in the fields?

So far...all of my attempts have ended with putting the ${VARIABLE} in plain text into the Field, and not pulling the data for the Variable.

I can explain further if needed....hopefully this will be enough to get the answers I need.

Please provide example Variable and/or example SQL Statement variable that work so I can see where I went wrong.

How does the Nodes table OSVersion get populated?

I see the data I want in several default tables such as OSVersion, but I am not able to populate my custom property fields with the same data.

Where can I find the queries that NCM uses to populate these fields?

I'd definitely like to have that as well. I already opened a feature request for that. In June 2012 I was in contact with Corgey, Bill from the support team and requested the same as we have mainly Juniper devices.

Sadly I didn't here back from them yet.

Well this is why I wanted a community vote on the feature. If the majority of the customer base agrees, how can Solarwinds ignore that demand?

I think its actually simple to create, since other areas already do have the ability to use SQL queries -- example: Variables, Alerts, Emails, all can use some form of SQL query to pull the data needed.

Porting from another area should be easy enough...then adding another option to Custom Properties calling it SQL where the basic query can be written so that custom fields can be filled in automatically with the correct information.

For those who do not know or do not use Custom Properties --- currently the TEXT option allows you to fill in custom data manually, but this can be very tedious when the customer has 8000+ nodes from 6 different vendors, and 10 different device types, with none of them being Cisco.
