Has anyone installed this yet?

Yes I installed this yesterday and My website seems to have stopped working. It's running but when I try to access it to login or refresh already open windows (which should bring my to the login screen since it was restarted) all I get is a browser that keeps spinning likes it's waiting to refresh data and it never stops. If I shut down the web serivice I does show up as not running. I was hoping someone else here had this problem. and has already fixed it.

I just solved it I just had to stop and start IIS quickly and it fixed it.

We have had the 7.6 beta version running for a month or so and we haven't had any problems. I upgraded to 7.7 yesterday and it seems just fine. In fact, I think our default Orion homepage pops up quicker now than it did previously. We have:


Network Elements 3522 Elements 
Nodes            219 Nodes 
Interfaces       3005 Interfaces 
Volumes          298 Volumes

The Syslog server is a big help, but the rules engine still has some minor bugs that need fixing. Solarwinds support seems pretty responsive to these problems, though. As far as performance goes, it's difficult to tell if anything is being dropped (syslogs, that is), but we have all our networking gear and Unix boxes sending logs to Solarwinds and it doesn't seem to have affected the performance overall. Of course, DB size has increased, but that can be resolved by simply not choosing to store all your logs until the end of time.

I have just installed 7.7, was running 7.5 previously. No serious problems, but then no noticeable differences (except syslog). It has reset some the images I customised, but they are easy to change back.

Can't get the Toolset Integration part working, right-clicking doesn't bring any Toolset options...

When I upgraded to v7.7 the Engineers toolset worked perfectly from my laptop without any changes, apart from he syslog server this has to be one of the best improvements to Orion.

As a follow-up to my reply to jonchill on 03/04/2005, I'd like to mention to everyone that Solarwinds technical support has really impressed me in the past couple months with how responsive they are to problems with not only the 7.6 beta, but also my reported issues with the syslog service in v7.7.

In addition, the performance of our box is certainly much better now with v7.7. CPU history graphs show a sharp drop in CPU utilization (from an avg of 95% to an avg of 45%!) immediately after the install of v7.7. The drop even occurred after configuring all our devices to send syslogs to the Orion server.

Kudos go to Solarwinds for this release!

I upgraded to Ver8 for the EE and 7.7 Orion but not able to access the toolsets from the web yet....not sure if another tab is suppose to pop up when you mouse over a node or the options for toolsets should be on the page. How do you guys access the toolset from the web??

I must mention though that web pages seem to take a little longer to open up from any computer, I did stop and restart the IIS service and rebooted. Not much difference yet...may be some tuning need somewhere...Any tips??

You should be able to hover over an interface or node and when you right-click on it you should get a menu.

One thing you can check, this is something we had on that took weeks to figure out, is urlscan. Look for a urlscan.ini file on your server. This tells you what file extensions can and can not run. If .exe is listed as being denied then the integration of the toolset won't work. You have to allow .exe..that fixed it for us. There are also log files in the urlscan directory that will tell you if its blocking it or not.

1. Ensure that whatever IE-based browser you are using (IE, Maxthon, etc.) will allow you to install ActiveX components.

2. Ensure that you have "Allow Browser Integration" set to 'Yes' in your Account properties.

I reread the admin guide and it specifically says that the toolset must be installed on the computer(s) that you want to access web integration with Orion V7.7.
This is not what I had imagined. I prefer Orion integrating with the full toolset that's installed on the server, that way I can troubleshoot using orion from any computer no matter where I am geographically.
Anyhow, the evolution of SolarWind continues, and I will be adding a few requests for the SW developers.

Seems to run ok, but I found that the scheduled reports I email to myself now come with the swtoolset.exe attached. I'm not really using that feature so I just moved the .exe out of the webspace.

Just upgraded 7.5 to 7.7 with no issues to talk about.... website performance has greatly improved.. this seems like a really stable and good upgrade.

One of the more serious problems that I had with 7.6 beta was with stopping the service. Under 7.5 it would stop in seconds unless I was having a problem with polling. With 7.6 beta it would take 45 minutes to an hour no matter what. Can anybody verify that this is NOT the case with 7.7?

The few times that I tried to shutdown/stop the service it took to long so I just killed the process manually. I don't think I waited more than 5 minutes though (yes...I'm impatient).

I had to reduce the ping packet size within network performance manager for a group of my devices which use hardware encryption. Tech support nailed it within 10 seconds of the call!!

I have just installed 7.7 and all the actions for the alerts have disappeared? Anyone know how to get them back???

Has anyone else noticed this? Running 7.5 on my dual Xeon server, both processors ran about even. Now with 7.7 one is running about 2 times higher than the other. I reported the same thing on 7.6 beta but never got a response.

I also wish that the Engineer Toolset features were based in the ORION server versus on the remote machine. Our network security will not let us access our NETWORK devices that ORION is monitoring from the other side of the firewalls. The ORION web GUI is usable; however Engineer Toolset is not as the IP's of the NETWORK devices are blocked by the firewall. If the Engineer Toolset was part of ORION that would be great. Maybe build it as an option with X amount of concurrent users that can access it and charge extra for this feature.
