Trying to monitor linux

Question

Hi. Has anyone succesfuly added a template to check linux (ubuntu) server for updates ? this is such an elementary thing i would like to monitor, jet there is no default template for it and since im having trouble creating it myself, im turning to you guys...

You could create a linux script monitor to accomplish this using bash (or another scripting language if you prefer). Once you isolate the number of packages as a variable then the rest of the script would be pretty easy. As far as formatting the output as SAM needs it it would looks like this, i'm just using a variable name of $packagecount as an example. echo "Statistic.PackageCount : $packagecount"; ^^^That is most important part. SAM requires that all variables are outputted with Statistic.. You can return up to 10 outputs per component monitor. An optional output you can include is a message along with the statistic. The Message. has to equal your Statisitc.. echo "Message.PackageCount : " You can set the thresholds outside of the script in the component monitor.

Well not all systems are the same. For me i have 10 + linux servers, for which a see a very limited info with SAM (mostly due to poor out of the box template choice for linux)  and the information that i would see would be:

This is helpful for managing my systems, since i would not want to use automatic installation.  so when it is time for server maintenece - i see that linux servers have 40 security updates available, i might aswell install them too. noise wise - it is a question of 2 row code and reading the output. even if triggered once a day, it should have no affect. sadly i have´nt found a way to import anything from Zabbix ...

antosp​, What is the end goal of checking for updates? The reason that I ask is that this would be a very noisy metric, especially since of the 100+ packages installed on your server, there could be multiple updates daily. Can you provide some more detail around this?
