SQL 2008 Enterprise settings

We have our db server separate from the app server and we are having issues with the db performance. Has anyone tried setting the min and max allowed memory in sql 2008 to see if this gives better performance? Right now, we have the default configuration that allows sql server to control the amount of memory it is using, which right now is all 8GB. We have just had approval to order 8 more GB.

Although it's MSSQL 2005, It may help.

If your SQL server is using 100% of the available memory it will page, which makes it very slow. I have set the minimum memory for SQL to 1/2 of system memory with positive results. Lowering the max would just make it page sooner.
