Monitoring partner sites that have overlapping IPs

Hi all,

I am looking at monitoring all partner sites on one solarwinds deployment.

Trouble is they have overlapping IPs.

Is it possible to monitor multiple partner sites that have overlapping IPs.

Would additional pollers at each site provide this functionality.

Hi Paul,

Four options:

1. NAT the overlapping sites to unique ranges.

2. SolarWinds agents easily deal with overlapping IP ranges, but only any good if the devices you are monitoring can have an agent installed. That is, it won't work for SNMP polled network devices.

3. Install a remote poller (APE) to each site, but unless it's quite a large site, this could work out to be rather expensive.

4. Install a dedicated Orion server on each site, requiring licenses for each module your require, again this could be expensive.

You could use these individually, or add Enterprise Operation Console (EOC) to give a single interface.

We typically use a blend of NAT and agents, as most of the remote sites we manage are a mixture of networking and servers.

That and we can't justify the additional price of another APE for the sizes of the (overlapping) environments.

Good options, but don't forget the the option that is the elephant in the room: Re-IP-Address the overlapping sites. Yes, inconvenient, expensive, time-consuming. But it's a great solution for the long run. When my organization merged with two others, we found many overlapping address ranges. Rather than installing NAT, which leaves clean-up for the future, we dug in and changed several thousand devices' addresses when we implemented an Enterprise DHCP solution.

The result was a clean network that was easily aggregated by CIDR, and it really was the right way to go for us. Troubleshooting and understanding became much simpler and efficient.

Might want to consider a remote office poller not a full on APE depending on the number of devices/nodes.... Its more economical and would provide you with the same functionally.

Thank you all for the advice, each remote site will be large so will need to go with APE at each site.

Another question is could we install IP monitor on each APE ?

One remote site would like to use up monitor , but I can see this having the same IP or erlapping issues if installed on the main poller ?
