Hi,

I have here some queries about SolarWinds, can anybody help me?

1. How does SolarWinds compute the availability (%) of the machine (found at the bottom of the console, together with the total availability of the machine)? When RTO occurs for couple of seconds?
2. In case RTO occurs, does the data from SNMP are still accurate with the actual test on machine?
3. Can we edit the legends of SolarWinds? Can we create our own legends?
4. Does SolarWinds has server group report that shows the apps data and the graph?
5. Can SolarWinds monitor Application Inventory like hotfixes, updates (windows), patches (windows) and applications installed?
6. Does Orion can monitor Services?
7. Does Orion can monitor Traffic ports or Server ports?
8. Can Orion forecast when the machine be replace?
9. Can Solarwinds create a monthly report with data and graph?
10. Can SolarWinds monitor or see all the services on a windows server?
11. Can we see or monitor all the applications installed on windows server?
12. Can SolarWinds monitor or see windows patches that are installed?

1.      How does SolarWinds compute the availability (%) of the machine (found at the bottom of the console, together with the total availability of the machine)? When RTO occurs for couple of seconds?

On any given poll, an application’s availability is either 100% or 0% based on the status of the application.  Availability is 100% if the application status is available, warning, or critical.  For any other status on that poll, APM marks the availability at 0%.

The status of an application is determined by the worst status of the individual component monitors for that application.  For example, if one component for an application is down, then we mark the application as down.  If one component is in a warning state and the rest of the components are up, then we give the application a warning status.

With respect to how an application’s availability is calculated over time, APM aggregates the availability values to Hourly/Daily tables during database maintenance, which is how the average is calculated.  Availability for component monitors is calculated in the same way.

2.      In case RTO occurs, does the data from SNMP are still accurate with the actual test on machine?
All data is stored on the Orion APM database.

3.      Can we edit the legends of SolarWinds? Can we create our own legends?
Orion APM gives you a great deal of freedom when it comes to customization. You can add a new view, view devices by type, view applications by type, adjust the web console settings, use your own map, and so on.

4.      Does SolarWinds has server group report that shows the apps data and the graph?
Yes. You have the ability to create, edit and manage groups. This is fully customizable.

5.      Can SolarWinds monitor Application Inventory like hotfixes, updates (windows), patches (windows) and applications installed?
No, it cannot.

6.      Does Orion can monitor Services?
Yes, Orion APM can monitor any of the services on any machine of your network.

7.      Does Orion can monitor Traffic ports or Server ports?
Orion APM has the ability to  monitor TCP ports.

8.      Can Orion forecast when the machine be replace?
Orion APM will give you the most detailed statistics available about the devices on your network allowing you to make an educated decision concerning replacement and/or upgrades.

9.      Can Solarwinds create a monthly report with data and graph?
Yes. This is fully customizable with the ability to export the data to Excel; however, reports do not have graphs.

10.  Can SolarWinds monitor or see all the services on a windows server?
Yes. Orion APM can see and monitor any service on Windows Server (2003 or 2008 R2).

11.  Can we see or monitor all the applications installed on windows server?
Orion monitors applications via WMI, RPC, SNMP, and sometimes scripts.  Since there is little information SNMP can pull directly, enabling these additional services would yield more thorough information.

12.  Can SolarWinds monitor or see windows patches that are installed?
No, it cannot. This falls under the same category as question 5.
