skipped polling cycles

Hi Guys

I am currently running v10.1 and I have created a number of advanced alerts to notify us when NPM is not collecting all the stats it should - either because Orion is at fault or the device.

Recently I added the "skipped polling cycles" parameter to the trigger and found that a number of Nodes had simply stopped collecting stats after the recent upgrade. Issue was resolved by unmanaging the nodes for 5 minutes. Because it had simply stopped collecting stats it did not change the Node status to down or unknown it simply held its last know status- soMay be worth checking your own installs for similar issues.

Anyway, I want to include this parameter value in an email if the alert is triggered but I can't figure out what the variable name is. Can anyone tell me what it is or how I find it.

Hi Jasper,

Here are a few screen shots of the 3 alerts we use. We use 3 separate alerts so the trigger time can be different (volume is longest as it is polled less often) and the alert text is also different.

Basically our 1st line checks if the device is working ok as when a server hangs it can continue to respond to ping but most times it will stop responding to SNMP. So we use these alerts to first of all look for hung servers and secondly to detect when Orion is not getting all its stats successfully.Nodes, Interface and volumes.

I looked through the database in the Volumes and Nodes tables and I can't find a field that looks like "Skipped Polling Cycles". If you could find that I think you could use it as a variable. Maybe they are doing some math, like "datetime - LastSync / Pollinterval = Skipped polling cycles" but I don't know.

Anyways, I really like your alerts above and I'm incorporating some elements into one of my new alerts, so thanks.
