Hello All,
This is my first post.
My question is the following, I have L3 cisco switches around my network and would like to monitor the traffic thats passing through these switches. Can this be done with SNMP or do I need NETFLOW.
Thanks
Colin
It depends on what level of detail you'd like to monitor. If you use SNMP you'll get an overall idea of the amount of traffic passing through each interface (physical & virtual), if you want to identify what kind of traffic and who is generating the traffic you'll need Netflow.
Hi Colin,
I think that depends on what exactly you want to monitor. Probably some summary counters are available via SNMP but you'll need netflow for full details.

Two independent answers and we seem to agree. That's good :-).

Yes, I am looking for detailed information. Who is sending what and who is receiving what !
I guess I am stuck since I don't have any routers on my network.
If you can setup a SPAN port you can always use nProbe which will create Netflow for you which you can then send to a collector.
If you are looking to set up a SPAN port, you can download a free SPAN port configurator tool from this link. SPAN Port Configurator
