IMPORT HOSTS INTO ORION WITH PREDETERMINED RESOURCES TO MONITOR...

Hello all,

Is there a way to import/populate the Orion database using a CSV file or other method?

We have 1000+ Linux servers that have identical hardware specs. The only thing that is different is the IP and the host name. All the rest is the same like the logical disks, physical disks, NICs, fans, memory, and such. I want to avoid the discovery process and having to tell Orion what to monitor on each server by having to click on each host and put check boxes for each resource to be monitored ( NIC, Memory, CPU, etc.). I would be surprised if Orion could not support an import/insert of a CSV file or text file that would have all the pertinent fields and values in place to populate the database.

Has anyone done this?

Just an FYI... You don't actually have to click on each individual element to turn monitoring on/off. If they are contiguous, you can select the one at the top, hold down the "shift" key, select the last one in the group, and then click on "Select Marked".

Also, you can click on the first one, hold your mouse button down, and drag down to the last one in the group, then click on "Select Marked". If you're looking to monitor all elements on a device, you can simply click on "Select All".

Based on your message, I wasn't sure if you were aware of that. Keep in mind that unless you have the SLX version, every element counts towards your license, and even with SLX you want to be careful not to monitor too many unnecessary elements so that you aren't buying polling engines that you really don't need, as well as consuming the additional space in the database.

I agree that it's somewhat of an inconvenience to have to perform this step when adding devices, but when you weigh it against the alternative of having it automagically include all elements for monitoring, in many ways it's probably a necessary evil.

Thanks for your reply bbusbey.

Once discoverd, you will still need to pick the resource/element to monitor.

This means I will still have to interact/mouse click for each and every node...? That will equate to a thousand + clicks or more depending on how many resouces I have to monitor. Maybe 10 thousand + clicks if I want to monitor 10 resouces on each node.

Does that sound right? SWinds can you offer a better solution to this issue?

Also you mentioned "define the options"? Is there a site that explains the seed file format? I couldnt find anything on a seed file.

Yes,

This was a feature I had to wait for a while, but they did provide a working version. If you have 8 it should work.

However, it only supports IP's you can not give it DNS names. Use the Network Discovery and import seed file.

From the seed template, define the options and list your IP's. Once discoverd, you will still need to pick the resource/element to monitor.
