APM help

Hi,

I have just installed Orion and APM on our network and I have a couple of questions on APM. Last week I started monitoring HTTP, TCP:80 on an intranet server. Occasionally HTTP fails to respond and causes an alert but when I check the server there are no problems.

Is it common for application monitoring to give false alerts or is the alert real?

Also, how can I tell what version of APM I am using as I have noticed a service pack that is available.

We are on Orion 8.5.1.

APM 1.0 is the only version available. You should install SP4. You might be getting alerts based on temporary conditions. You can set your alerts to only trigger if the condition remains true for XX minutes, which will suppress transient events.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm installing the SP now and I'll change the trigger as you suggest. I have a follow up query though.

Our Orion server and SQL server are on different subnets but the intranet server is on the same subnet as the Orion server. When the Alert is trigged is it only because the Orion server has missed a poll or could it be that the SQL server is overloaded and can't see the other subnet?

Denny, Is there a way to test if Orion is in fact alerting on temporary conditions? We are having similar problems with our APM and it seem to jump around on two different Proxy HTTP montors. I have the alert time until trigger set to 4 minutes but this still sends alerts. BlueCoat engineers say there is nothing wrong with BC.

Now, without testing, my first question is about your 4 minutes trigger. How often are you polling the HTTP monitor? If you want the delay to make it difference, it needs to be at least 2 polls long. If you are polling every 2 minutes, and your trigger is 4 minutes, then you'll only get an alert if it's down for 2 polls. But if you're polling every 5 minutes, then the 4 minute delay won't help at all.
