Orion Poller Locations

We are about to install a new set of Orion monitoring tools. As we look at how we want to do this I keep thinking is there a better way. Currently we have a set of tools all behind one the same switch on the same subnet.

So the question is this the best way for the new set of tools?

Would it be better to put the pollers out in different areas of my network - off of different routers and switches? Keeping the application server and the SQL server on the same switch and subnet as each other.

I can see some advantages and some disadvantages both ways.

be aware that the pollers speak direct with the database so they need to be close to it also. however, you can have firewall between the pollers and the DB as long as the latency is very very low, as the amount of writes causes a very intensive network usage. do not even think about using old or over utilised network equipment between the poller and DB

ideally, SW would produce pollers that speak back to the central poller, or saves up DB writes and sends back in bulk. I would love to deploy pollers to customer networks and have them report back to my big central orion without the use of EOC< but EOC does meet this requirement so i do not expect SW to create anything in this space,,,,,

I have an Orion server, and 2 additional pollers but they are all on the same physical/logic vlan, and so is the SQL server cluster.

We are the same as toilet, all being on same subnet, save for one poller that sits on the other side of a firewall and hits all of our remote gear.

Although, we will be pulling that back inside as there is no visible benefit to having it out there and many benefits to having it inside the FW DMZ.

My current install has:

1 Orion NPM

3 Pollers

1 Web Console

1 SQL Server

I will be adding to a different part of our network the following:

1 Orion NMP

4 Pollers

1 SQL Server

1 Orion NCM

Along with that I will be adding one EOC server tying the two Orion NMP together.

We are looking at some of the other Oron tools too. So that is why I ask the question is there a better way of location these tools that would give me a closer port of view with what I am monitoring.

Thanks to those that have reply to question already. You have stated some of the same things that I have been thinking of. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
