where are the APM polls originate?

Hi,

We have a server running as primary NPM with a primary APM and a number of additional servers running as NPM and APM pollers. Target servers are distributed for polling across all the our pollers, both primary and auxilary.

ICMP & SNMP polls from our NPM primary and auxillary pollers are sourced as expected from the polling server that the target was added to. From the few Wireshark traces that we have run so far, it appears that all of the APM polling is sourced by the primary poller alone.

Is this how it is supposed to work? I assumed that installing an auxuillary APM poller on an auxillary NPM poller and then adding target servers to it would ensure that all of that targets polls would be sourced from that poller. But if this is indeed the case then it begs the question of why bother to install auxillary APM pollers.

If this is not how it's supposed to be, how can I force the auxillary poller to do its job and source the ICMP, SNMP & APM polls from the server where the target is configured.

That's a great question. Also, does anyone know if you can transfer existing applied APM templates to other primary pollers if you were to scale out and use the EOC functionality? It's obvious how to move machines in the NPM but i don't know how to move APM stuff.

Hi Robert,

There is an additional APM element that can be installed on the Additional Polling Engines. This is another license, but is pretty inexpensive (sorry not got price list in front of me at the moment).

Then within the Web interface under the APM settings you have the choice to poll from the primary Orion or from the Additional Polling engine the node is allocated to. This obviously allows you to scale in a more controlled manner, ensuring you don't overload the primary Orion with too much APM polling.

Heck - that was hidden away - & named strangely.

We had already deployed the APM polling modules across our NPM pollers, but I missed that setting - for reference it's

From the Orion home page > Admin > APM Settings > Data & Database Settings

Then change the Poller Engine Mode from the default of Local-Only to Poller-Bound

We'll wait & see for a few hours to see if it improves.

You will need to restart the Orion Module Engine service for this change to take effect.
