SAM - WMI vs. SNMP?

Hello all.. I am evaluating SAM to complement our Orion Suite. All nodes are currently managed and monitored using SNMP. When I try to initially set up some of the SAM features to evaluate (lets say – “directory file count” for this example) I get errors that the node is not setup for WMI. When I look at changing the node to WMI from SNMP it warns that I will lose all history. Can I monitor using SAM with SNMP? Can I use both SNMP and WMI together on a node? Thanks.

In the example you provided above, the only way you should receive that error message if you applied the File Count template to a node and chose to use "Inherit Windows Credentials from node", instead of specifying specific windows credentials for the monitor to use. In this case, because the node is managed via SNMP, there are no Windows node credentials that can be used. Node credentials are only available when the node is managed via “WMI”.

What I will suggest. Contiue monitor the node using SNMP and create a templates to monitor the specific Service/Process/Performance Counter. By that you will keep all the history and you will not put extra load on Server.

So should "Credentials for Monitoring" be set to "<None>" ?

When I set to "<None>" using the "File Count Template" in SAM I get this error - Unable to connect to "XXX.XX.X.X" for WMI access.

Correct. The template has not yet been assigned to a node so no credentials are required at this level. When you attempt to assign the template to the node you will be prompted to provide valid credentials. These credentials will then be stored in the Credential Library and added to the quick pick list so they can be easily selected again the next time you assign an application template to a node.
