Network Bandwidth Testing

Is there a tool within Solarwinds or third party that will measure bandwidth download speed between all my links. Thing is we have a Data Center where our core resides and users complain of extremely slow download speeds, even opening up shares on the servers. Our sites are connected via Opte-man with MPLS, and of course when I troubleshoot my reply's are 1ms as it should be. We have NPM v8.1, Cirrus, and Netflow.

You could possibly use their "WAN Bandwidth Killer" in their Engineers Toolset edition..

Dare I say join the club, we've had similar issues for the past couple of years and its always been a slagging match between the network and server support teams. So after much delay we went out and got IPMonitor while it's basic for in depth Application monitoring (but then the price tag reflects this) it can be setup to test various ports and transactions along with bandwidth tests on server NIC cards and also a test which we've setup to transfer a set amount of data between the IPMonitor and our three sites and it returns an average speed for the transfer and how long it takes after running this for a couple of weeks we now have a baseline figure for our WAN and LAN so we can either alert if it goes beyond a certain point or use it as evidence when users complain.

We have passed several reports of the network test and a particular server bandwidth test to or server support colleagues and they actually found the problem on the server. So its already paid dividends for us.

That’s exactly the same situation going on here between our two teams, network and server team. And while I did try the bandwidth killer which was suggested it doesn’t provide the functionality I need this seems like it will just flood your network with traffic, I’m going to look into this, thanks.

Could you tell us a little more? We are seriously considering functionality that sounds like what you're talking about, but I don't want to ask any leading question. If you have a sec, describe the business problem and what an ideal solution would look like.

IPMonitor solves some our our issues particularly the Network Speed Test\Bandwidth test and some of the port\transaction monitors but ideally it would be nice if this could be split down to the network response time and the application response time within the monitor so we can differentiate between the two it's OK saying that a test of Telnet responds in 3ms how is this broken down, 2ms for the network response and 1ms for the application or vice versa this would help hugely in the 'war' with our server support team and also our users.
