VMWare discovery issues in SAM

Hi,

We are in process of discovering VMware environment with SAM.For virtual infra discovery, do we need to create credential for each ESX hosts or we can discover entire VMware infra using vcenter vsphere API? If we discover using vcenter vsphere API, what level of performance data will it gather? Will it gather virtual server performance data or only underlying esx data?

No need to monitor each host, point at vcenter with API credentials and it will populate the necessary info for the hosts under the vcenter, including hardware sensors and such. If you do set up SNMP on the hosts directly it adds the ability to monitor the local storage and specific NICS.

there is one point to note here.. if u use Vcenter polling all the hosts will get discovered and also takes the socket licenses of all the hosts..

so lets say u are bound to monitor only 50 hosts out of overall 100, socket licenses of all 100 will be considered.. we just faced this issue in one customer and when asked SolarWinds support they have informed that we need to use a account which only has access to hosts you want to monitor...

yes if you do not have licenses for all the hosts then you just set up the service account in vmware to exclude the hosts you dont have licenses for.
