Alert flooding

I have an issue where every once in a while I get bombed by alerts early in the morning. They will come in one right after the other and then as fast as they come in I will receive reset notices. At first I thought it was that the server rebooted after MS updates but I disabled those updates, then I checked the logs see if the server actually rebooted and I see nothing.

Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any input as to what I could do or check?

How are you sending alerts out? I know that when you set it for smtp and your smtp server is being stupid, it can store/hold your alerts and send them at all weird hours, I was getting alerts for config changes at 2 in the morning when they happened the previous day during working hours.

Yes I am sending them out SMTP. So if it is holding them in a queue and sending them out all at once does this mean they are legit alerts? What was the fix when it was occuring on your server?

There are probably legit alerts "when" they occur, but useless if a site is down and you don't receive an alert until 4 hours later. The Lotus Notes admin had to allow the server to send SMTP and be a relay (this admin is not very good at anything but scripting within Notes) and things settled back down as far as response time. What are you using for your SMTP service?

We use Exchange Server 2005. So I need to allow Exchange to send SMTP and be a relay? What do you mean by relay?
