Is there a way to change the behavior of built-in monitors?

I've been using Solarwinds for a couple of days; It's really powerful and flexible.

The manual says that we can define our own monitor components through vb/perl scripts.

Here are my questions,

1.  Many monitors are built without scripts, How do they work? Are there any other ways to add customized monitors?

2. Is it possible to change the behavior of built-in monitors, such as SQL user experience monitor? Or, are they open for change?

Only the Windows Script Component Monitor, PowerShell Component Monitor, Linux/Unix Script Monitor, and Nagios Script Monitors use script.
