String Functions

So, I'm a little surprised that my last post was removed without any reason or response. Is this the kind of support I'm to find here on this forum? I'm so happy it was a selling point when my company spent the dollars it did for the product. I was being genuine with my question about the utilization of string functions and operators. But if the moderator of this forum is going to treat every "negative" post as typical trolling that moderator can shove it up their face. I'm terribly sorry for the cynicism, but it stems from the frustration of trying to make this expensive product do something that What's Up Gold can do out of the box.

So, again, can someone explain to me what functions and operators are available from within APM? Is it a requirement to use the Universal Device Pooper to accomplish this? If so, is there a way to modify the horrendous way the data from the UDP is presented? I really enjoy all the pretty graphs and such from the other resource panes displayed - it's a shame the UDP looks so awkward... kinda like a 3 legged dog... you know, you feel really sorry for it, but you can't stop staring at it. Please, someone tell me there's a better way to present this data... Orion gods, please give me a sign.

I think you will find that many negative posts are here on thwack and that they live long and happy lives, especially those that contain constructive or spawn constructive criticism. Your original post was removed due to the use of an expletive. You will find you have a PM (private message) from the moderator which explains as much.

Your valid question as to the usage of string functions and operators will be forwarded to product management and development for their input. Meanwhile, I suspect you may get responses from the community.

On another note, I rather like three-legged dogs, actually... just for their straight up staring appeal.

I think you mean NPM, not APM, but I'm not sure. I'm making this assumption because the Universal Device Poller is part of NPM.

I think by "this" you mean string functions and operators, but can you be more specific as to what you are trying to accomplish?

Let's say I have an APC UPS. Let's say that I want to display the run time remaining of the UPS using the "timeticks" value available from OID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.318.1.1.1.2.2.3.0. Now let's say I want to use the "SNMP Monitor" component within APM to query these values. UH OH! The "timeticks" value is returned in 1/100ths of a second! Well, now that's a really silly number to display! Maybe I'm not looking at the Application Monitor template correctly, but I don't see a field anywhere where I might be able to apply any operators or functions to the queried values... And that's because there isn't! I would like to start an enhancement request petition with all of the users of APM. If we band together we might be able to get Solarwinds to add this functionality and completely do away with the ridiculous UDP and any other equally ridiculous workaround. As it stands I am probably going to modify the apm_AddPortEvidence stored procedure within the database to divide the value for this particular component by 6000. And, believe it or not, this is easier to do than messing around with the UDP brick of a tool. it will also look a lot nicer and show up in my Top 10 Component views. I think it's funny that I have to resort to stored procedure hacking or using a stupid external tool to perform VALUE/6000. So awesome. Unless I'm completely nuts and just missing where this is done...

I am not sure if you are aware but you can use the UnDP to poll data without having to present it in the interface. Once the data is polled and stored in the database you can do with it as you like.

If you are able to write stored procedures you clearly know your way around SQL. Use the UnDP to poll the data and then write your own SQL queries to present the data in a way that is more useful to you. Heck, you can even use SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) to create your own graphs if you like.

I just thew up in my mouth. Thank you for the tip, however I am aware of the UnDP (I was referring to it as the UDP). I want to avoid using that tool as it has been to known to spread mad cow disease, SARS, and the cancer. I understand, that in order to manipulate result values, one is forced to use the UnDP, but I do not believe the users of this product should be so complacent with its use. It is a horrible solution. if the recommendation is to pull the data down into a database and design my own reports to display it - I wouldn't need APM at all. So, I can write a simple vbscript to call snmpget, populate the information into a SQL Express instance, design a simple report with SSRS to display the data in nearly any way that I desire, which costs only man hours to complete... wait... that sounds awesome... why did I buy APM again?
