How to alert when a web site node is down?

My company has hundreds of web sites, and the group that manages them want alerts setup to notify them when one goes down. I'm relatively new to Solarwinds and understand how to alert when a server or other device goes down but I'm not so sure on a web site. The status of the nodes is External so I think I would need an application alert for this. The goal would be to have one alert that monitors all of the web sites instead of one alert for each web site.

Has anyone done this before, and can you help me get started in the right direction?

This is probably best done in our Server and Application Monitor (SAM). Create a HTTP Monitor and assign it to that external website.

If you're just needing something basic then this is what your alert trigger condition would look like. You could create a new alert and then in the Trigger Actions setup the email notification to go to that group/team.

In the alert email I'm having trouble getting the node name to show up. When the email is received, it has the variable string text instead of the variable value. I would like it to show the node name because that's the name of the web site. Is it because I'm alerting on a Component and not a Node?

Yeah, there are a lot of potential alert variables and unfortunately change based on the alert type. What i have found very useful is to follow these steps, then you can see what each alert variable output would be without having to send the email first.
