Rebuilding Solarwinds Orion Server while Using Existing SQL

Hello there,

I was recently assigned with updating our Solarwinds Orion environment, which was running on 2008 R2. As the newest updates are not compatible, I will be rebuilding the server with Server 2016.During the installation of Solarwinds, the installed asks me if I want to create a new database or use an existing one. Is it acceptable to reuse the Solarwinds SQL server that we already have?

As long as your new engine is running the same version as the old one was you are fine to keep the same dp, but depending on what version of SQL you run the new versions might also require you to upgrade the SQL instance, I believe 2014 is the earliest SQL version supported now.

This is correct. As mesverrum mentioned, you would need to start with the same SolarWinds version and connect it to the existing database. Once you would do that, you can upgrade SolarWinds.

There is one additional hint - if you can, please install new Windows Server with the same hostname and IP address from the previous installation.

Main polling engine is saved in few places inside the database and if you connect existing database to the new machine, which has different IP address, you might hit some incompatibility. SolarWinds has a technical article with SQL queries to repair such scenario.

However the best approach would be to avoid it and remain with the same network configuration

I have done it many times without issues.

SQL Server 2012 is the lowest supported version by SolarWinds.

Thank you! So this means I just need to match the Orion Platform version correct? We are on 2017.1 but we are also running IPAM, NCM, NTA, etc.

All the modules need to match your existing environment otherwise when you run the configuration wizard it might not let you connect to the Database.

It is normally recommended to upgrade as far as possible on your existing platform (2008 Max is NPM12.1) and then migrate to the new OS and continue to upgrade to 12.2. Personally, I often favour installing the existing versions of software on your new machine, connecting up the DB and then upgrading on the new machine, but each to there own I guess.
