Port Monitor

Hi,

I am currently using TCP port monitor to check if some of the TCP ports are available. I did not set any threshold on this so I must be using the "template defined" threshold. When I try to search for that value, I could not find it. How does solarwinds APM defined this threshold? Does it do a baseline of the TCP syn - ack response time to determine the proper response time? Because sometimes we do get alerts on this but I could not see the thresholds. When I open the template we are using the warning and critical thresholds are empty. Also there is a Response Timeout on the Orion General Threshold, is that what's being used? I just don't understand how it works because the Admin guide does not tell me. Any idea?

Based on our research and experience it appears you may have discovered a new bug. There is no default threshold and if one was not set by you, the user, the warning and/or critical alerts should not occur.

TCP Port Monitor

This component monitor tests the ability of a TCP/IP-based service to accept incoming sessions.

Statistic
This component monitor does not compute a statistic.

Field Descriptions
Enable Component
Determines whether the component is enabled. Disabling the component leaves it in the application in a deactivated state not influencing either Orion APM application availability or status.

Port Number
This field is the TCP protocol connection port. The default value is 80.

Response Time Threshold
These fields allow you to set warning and critical threshold conditions based on the response time. The response time is the time in milliseconds it takes Orion APM to determine that a component is not Down and to retrieve any statistical data.

I believe this should help resolve your issue.

I saw these from the documentation but the situation is we don't have anything set for the warning and critical response threshold for the TCP port monitor. However, we are getting alerts (Application Down) where the condition for it to be triggered is when the Node status is not Down but the Application Status is down. How do you define that an application status is down? Is it based on the TCP port monitor response time (no thresholds in our case since we are using default template)? Is it based on the ORION general threhold response time? Or is there a baseline threshold? Or is it based on the polling time out ?

Basically, what time out is used to set the condition that the Application is Down when in the first place the "Response time thresholds for the Application is empty?". Any thoughts?
