Orion with APM Configuration Questions

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some help with a new setup of Orion and APM. Please see the list of questions below. Thanks in advance for any feedback and help.

1. I'm getting differences in CPU utilized for the same process being monitored with APM using WMI and SNMP. For my case, I see sqlservr.exe with different CPU utilized.

2. What is the performance impact on the network and server being monitored using WMI, especially for larger environments?

3. SNMP drops since it is best effort. How do we handling this with large environments with many WANs.

4. Events noise with backups and times when resources spike for a short period can cause false alerts. Any way to alert on just sustained activity not just spikes? Alert suppression does not appear to have this capability.

5. Looking to see when a user experience monitor for AD and exchange will be available?

Hi,

1- Which one is the closest to the real values noticed on the device? I would preferably trust the WMI Performance Counters as Microsoft populates most of the information through that interface/protocol and neglects their SNMP mibs.

2- If the WMI queries run by APM needs to list huge amount of instances on a WMI class you will see the wmiprvse.exe service eats a part of the CPU. If the Polling Interval is too short, you will notice the same issue.

3- You might want to flag the SNMP packets with a specific Class of Service on your WAN. Use a dedicated interface on the Orion server for the monitoring traffic.

4- You can schedule when an alert is active (Valid Time of Day/ Selected Days of the Week) to avoid triggering alerts during backups schedule. You can use the option in the avanced alerts: "Do not trigger this action until condition exists for more than X hours/minutes/seconds" to handle resources spike. This option is available at the bottom of the Trigger Condition tab in the advanced alerts.

5- in APM 2.5 some Round Trip Email monitor will be available for the MAPI,IMAP4 and POP3 protocols.

Concerning AD, the actual template checks the WMI Performance Counters and that specific services are up and running. However if you have the time you might want to use a Windows Script Monitor which tries to authenticate against the domain controller and return the result to APM.
