Disk Space Alert

I have two servers that have limited drive space that can't be expanded that usually sit between 82% and 85% full. I have an alert configured for all of my nodes that if the drive space goes over 80% send out an alert. The issue I am having is that these servers will never reach below 80% so I manually went to each of them and changed the default thresholds to 90% and 95% and cleared out the alert condition. Once I cleared it out it still continued to alert on the 80% on the All Nodes disk space alert. Do I have to setup a separate alert for these two servers? And if so how do I have those two not alert on my all nodes disk space alert? Thanks!

You are not alone amigo.

This is a pain point of SolarWinds that has still not been resolved with a granular, intelligent process. With other tools it is very easy to do this with object overrides.

If your using the built in disk alert I don’t think it goes off those thresholds.

i ended up creating an alert that used capacity forecasting that then uses those thresholds. Also had a’monitor capacity‘ switch in custom properties and linked it all together.

I have a couple servers like this....

What I ended up doing was....in the alert logic I added a trigger that excluded the couple of systems I didn't want that alert to trigger on. Then I setup a second drive space alert for the systems I removed....so as you mentioned, I ended up with two different alerts.

Not a fun endeavor though with 18,000 unique volumes.

Create instructions on how to to do it put it in your service desk soution then send the link with the alerts so everyone can do it. Stop locking these systems down to just admins and make them first line tasks.

We could not possibly give our Help Desk Administrator level access to tweak Alert configuration. That's asking for trouble. Engineers should be able to manage overrides at the volume level that are mutually exclusive to alerting. I do this kind of thing easily with other tools.

Overrides should be available at the disk level within alerting UI.

Automated disk discovery and inventory should also be available, but thats a whole other topic discussed in many threads.

The bottom line is, managing volume thresholds and disk inventory in SolarWinds is absolutely painful. Alex created a template but its not the magic bullet unfortunately.

Many, many threads exist on both topics so its not just me being me. A guy just threw up a new thread on disk discovery in fact. I love it when people realize this deficiency - it makes me feel like I'm not the crazy one.

No course I have one alert for all disk space issues.

i allow most of it to change the thresholds on the disks.

on each node i have a custom property so I can add an owner email of the device. Which Can be used in the alert.

we have a default threshold set by Infrastructure Manager.

it works well and I’m not involved in the process so not a blocker. Like now last day till new year but I know they don’t need me to change anything.

Work as if you will be under a bus tomorrow sounds negative but it frees you up for far more interesting parts of Solarwinds
