Rename Nodes in bulk

I have been handed a task to configure SolarWinds. I took over from another person. I have done some research into the product but in all actuality, am new to the product. The person I took over from, did a basic discovery of the network and told management that the configuration was complete. Not so. Anyhow, what I need to do is take the 1000 or so nodes and rename in a common format / add some details to them. Does SolarWinds have a method of exporting data, make changes and reimport?

Under "manage nodes, custom property editor, you can export a variety of fields to Excel, update them, and then import them.

That goes for almost everything, but there are a few fields which are not edit-able - such as name.

For that, you need to go to a scripted solution. This recent thread has some of the current thoughts on the topic:

Thanks for the reply. I believe that the custom property editor will work fine as some things change with the information here. However, we are using SQL as a database. I found one article relating to SQL import of data. Is it possible export the existing tables from SQL, modify, then reimport without any issues?

No. You'll run into issues with some of the primary keys. You CAN do that for custom property data, but not for metadata such as node names.

Thanks. I really was hoping that I did not have to do it individually. I'll experiment with a script.
