Is there a way to setup an alert where it will alert on a group i've setup within SAM, or NPM? I'm using the latest version of SAM and NPM.
I see what you are trying to do now. The Group alerts are meant for the overall status of the group, not for individual members of the group. My suggestion to achieve both your grouping and alerting objectives is to use Custom properties (Settings > Manage Custom Properties).
You can then reference the custom property in the Alerts like shown below
You can create a Group using a dynamic query
So, you just have to manage the assignment of nodes in the custom property editor and it can be carried through for groups and alerting. You can also use this for changing the hierarchy of All Nodes resources, filtering various dashboard resources like the Top xx resources, etc.
Yes. Look for the out of the box alerts named like 'alert me when a group...' in advanced alert manager
ah, i even see one of my options is to select a group for the type of monitor. I've tried to modify one of the existing alerts, like the memory or host down alerts. Not having much luck thou. I've tried the following and it's looking for another condition, not sure why.
Copied the High Physical Memory Utilization with Top 10 Processes alert.
Trigger Condition
Trigger Alert when all of the following apply
Percent memory used is greater than 96
Group Name is equal to Atlanta Servers
This returns Please specify a complete Trigger Condition
Field not specified or invalid.
I could only get it to accept the alert if i did the following.
Node Name is equal to Server1
Node Name is equal to Server2
I'm hoping that we can figure out the top option so i don't have to enter all the server within that group. that would be a LOT
Any suggestions?
Hi HolyGuacamole,
Sorry i wasn't clear in my original question. The second option looks like it would work, but i don't seem to have the CustomMachineType option. What version of alert manager are you running? I'm running 2014.1.0.
Thank you again for the suggestions.
Hi mhorn2027 , HolyGuacamole is giving you an example on how you will have to take it forward. Custom properties are not built in , you will have to create them as per your requirement. "My suggestion to achieve both your grouping and alerting objectives is to use Custom properties (Settings > Manage Custom Properties)." -> He is asking you to create a custom property and use it accordingly for your requirement.
Got it. Still a newbie to this. Thanks for the explanation Vinay, thought i was just special there for a minute.
This is what makes Orion painful for large environments and when its managed by multiple administrators. Maintaining custom properties for every server that is added is horribly counter productive.
Mandatory custom properties is something we're currently working on. This should reduce the pain associated with managing and maintaining custom properties as new nodes are added to Orion.
