We have environments that we are physically moving and would like to unmanage all the VM's on the ESX host. I have not found a simple way to do this, any suggestions, maybe a feature request? Maybe it's a feature I'm just not seeing?
In theory, automatic dependencies should take effect when the ESX host goes down and the VMs running on that host should go into an unreachable status instead of "Down".
They will go into unreachable, but they would still be managed and still be polled during this "moving" period. I don't think there is a way to bulk unmanage all the VMs on a single host. The only way I know to do this would be another manual method. You would have to make a custom property to apply to each of the VMs and put the ESXi host name or number in that field. Then you could go into Node Management and sort by that to see just the ones you are looking for. It does not take long to do this as you can add the custom property to all of the required nodes at once. It would be nice if this were already out-of-the-box.
Seriously that would be nice. I've been trying to set up those dependencies, but with vmotion running and migrations taking place alot its been annoying to have to manually change the custom properties for all of my vms... but yup even before looking at thwack that was the same conclusion I came too, just hoping someone came up with a way around this
