Syslog alerts User Variables

I have a need to receive a syslog message and “cut” out characters 5 through 9 and place them into a variable. This then needs to be placed into an email to be sent to the remedy system (I can make the alert send emails). The reason I can’t have the whole message be sent, is this is going to equal a field in the remedy DB. I do still need the ${message} variable for the message text but I need to pull out the product and place that into a variable.
