APM General Question

We are moving to a hosted solution for our Exchange environment and have had several questions asked about what we will be able to monitor from an APM perspective. I have done a fair amount with APM and I think I know the answer to this but I want to make sure I am not missing anything. In order to be able to setup an APM template I see the need for the following:

Node needs to be in monitoring (preferable with SNMP else only up/down available)

Valid credential setup and is accepted by target node

Assuming that is correct what have people come up with from a perspective of trying to monitor an externally hosted service?

We work with some outside hosting companies as well and have had the same experience, they don't let us have access into their stuff. Ultimately, you should put the responsibility on them to monitor their stuff and let you know if there is a problem.

One thing you will probably be able to do is setup a round-trip mail test using the User Experience monitors.

Since this is a remote connection (traversing the Internet, I assume), you'll want to implement encryption wherever possible.

- For SNMP, you'll probably want to use SNMPv3 because it supports encryption.

- Depending on the components you create to monitor the Exchange environment, you might also want to use WMI. However, I don't know if WMI traffic is encrypted by default and if not, what exactly is entailed to enabled encryption.

- If you'll only be monitoring via SNMP, I don't think valid credentials are required.

- You'll want to punch a hole in the firewall to allow SNMP traffic which by default, is UDP port 161. You'll need to do the same if you wish to monitor via WMI as well. Off the top of my head, I don't know which ports it uses.

I have never monitored an external service/application so I can't provide any feedback on that front.

I believe this should cover most, if not all, of the potential issues with remote monitoring with APM. I'm confident the community will fill in the blanks if I missing anything.

Unfortunately it appears that the hosting company is not going to allow SNMP to be setup to respond to our pollers... I have found a thread on external monitoring that will allow for some limited monitoring.
