Window Logical Disk Monitoring

I am looking for the best way to setup logical disks monitors when all of the instance names are different per server. I need to monitor defined counters ex. (disk queue length, read/sec) from ALL logical disk instances. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.

I would recommend making an application template for each drive letter as the instance name is based upon "c:", "d:", "e:", etc. You can then use the application discovery wizard to apply each template accordingly to your servers that have these drive letters. Obviously they'll all have the "c:" drive application template assigned, but only a handful will have the "h:" drive or higher drive letter.

Another option might be to look at our Storage Manager product which monitors direct attached storage performance in a much more automated way.

We have a template created for every drive letter on physical disks but we have Logical Disks as well. What our SQL/Windows team has done is created a physical disk "E:\" and have created many logical disks "LUN's" to the SAN contained within the physical disk. Unfortunately none of the logical disks are labeled "instance label" the same across all servers. We need to monitor the same performance counters per instance of logical disk. Meaning "read/sec" for each instance So what would be ideal would be to select to monitor by default all Logical Disk Instance's with a default selection of counters to monitor. All instances meaning each instance individually not the "ALL Instance" option when selecting performance instance counters

Example

Logical disk e:\backup -- is where SQL backup's are stored

Logical Disk e:\data - is where SQL data files are stored

Logical Disk e:\logs - is where SQL log "ldf" files are stored.

Each Instance has its own disk space to be monitored

and each instance is a separate LUN on the SAN to be monitored for performance

I think we're mixing terms which is confusing me so my apologies if I'm not following.

A physical disk is a single spinal commonly referred to as a hard drive.

A RAID group is a collection of physical disks that are tied together into a single (commonly redundant) logical disk.

A Logical drive is a logical unit of disk storage, commonly referred to as a partition. All logical volumes in windows have drive letters

Based the example you provided above it sounds like you're using mount points, which are ways of presenting storage to the operating system which appear to look like sub directories off the root. Is this in fact what you're attempting to monitor as part of SAM?

Yes correct sorry i was mixing them up. We have multiple mount points named differently in multiple assigned drive letters. So we have a need to auto discover all of the mount points configured and assign a set of default performance counters on them. Thanks
