Orion Pollers on Mixed Windows Versions?

Hello all,

I believe that this is allowed but wanted to confirm before we do this.

We are currently running NPM 12.3 and Orion platform 18.2 with one main poller, one additional web poller, and five additional pollers. Currently all of these have identical servers running Windows 2012. We are considering upgrading our fifth poller to Windows 2016. I have found in the software documentation that Windows 2012 and 2016 are both supported on our current version, but cannot find anything stating if having these mixed versions of Windows on different pollers is acceptable or if it will cause issues. I believe that this is okay, as long as the software requirements fall in line with our current version, but figured I would ask the community in the event it does cause issues as this is for a production environment.

I'd open a ticket with support but you can have issues with inconsistent versions of .net from this, which can break additional pollers and the website on the primary. Be sure to only download the APE installer from the main poller and not from the customer portal for this.

From what i understand this should definitely work, except for the .NET version, make sure same version of .NET is running on 2012 and 2016 servers.

From my understanding (not tested) as long as any Additional Pollers running 2016 have the same .NET & MS Updates - And any Additional Pollers running 2012 have the same .NET & MS Updates - They should work fine. Obviously, the two different OS levels will have different patches but as long as all your 2012's match then a single 2016 shouldn't cause issues. It will be when you upgrade the other 4 to 2016 you will need to be sure to make sure they then match your existing 2016 server.

We needed to piecemeal our upgrades to 2016 one additional polling engine as a time which worked without issue. We upgraded (actually built new hosts and migrated but kept the same IPs and hostnames) all 9 APEs first before migrating the the main engine using aLTeReGo

The main consideration was ensuring that the .Net versions were the same by upgrading and testing that first.
