Query regarding MPE & APE

hi SolarWinds experts

if a customer has the following environment

NPM 12.4, NTA 4.5 & NCM 7.9 with SAM 6.7.1 on a virtual server(MPE)

3 APE on different servers

What would be poller limit on MPE ?

Will NPM have 12k limit?

Will SAM have 10K Limit?

Will NCM have 30K devices limit?

Will NTA have 50K FPS limit?

Also if we install additional APE from the Orion console will the APE get the following

Will NPM have 12k limit?

Will SAM have 10K Limit?

Will NCM have 30K devices limit?

Will NTA have 50K FPS limit?

take this as a rough estimate, if you need to call Support frequently take it as your hard guide and stick to the maximum numbers.

unfortunately each module has its own performance guidelines so for your environment:

1 core poller/ main Poller with

3 Additional Polling Engines you have the following “supported” numbers

NCM: 10.000 Nodes per Polling Engine (either MPE or APE) but no more than 30.000 nodes overall. So for NCM only you would only need 1MPE and 2 APEs

your Environment exceeds 2APEs so the overall amount counts ->30.000 Nodes

NTA: 50.000 FPS per Polling Engine (either MPE or APE) but no more than 300.000 FPS overall. So for NTA only you could have 1MPE and 5 APEs

your Environment: 1MPE + 3 APEs = 4 PEs -> 4 x 50.000 FPS = 200.000 FPS

NPM: 12.000 Elements per Polling Engine but no more than 400.000 Elements and no more than 100APEs. So for your environment 4x12.000 Elements = 48.000 Elements overall

SAM: 10.000 Components per PE but no more than 150.000 components overall

your Environment: 4 Polling Engines -> 40.000 components

you would need to distribute the load over the PEs yourself as Orion doesn’t have a automatic balancing function (yet?)

remember those numbers are suggested numbers, I have seen environments running smoothly waaaaay over the guidelines, but also poorly sized environments where only a fragment of the maximum numbers lead to a poor user experience.

Also keep in mind that these are all guidelines and not a hard cap, i've built environments far in excess of those counts and you just have to make sure you have a high powered backend to support it, as well as making sure you are minimizing any possible losses to efficiency.

Also bear in mind the above limits are based on the default polling intervals which can be globally adjusted if needed.

As a (poor) example, if there are 100 application monitors with a total of 1,000 component monitors assigned on the default 5-minute polling interval, this is the equivalent of monitoring 500 component monitors at a 10-minute interval, etc.

When planning an environment with multiple APE's, consider whether NAM licensing may be an appropriate solution for you. It offers the ability to expand to 40 APE's while simultaneously providing NPM, NCM, NTA, VNQM, IPAM, UDT, and HA.

NAM does not include SAM and/or DPA.

I found justification for the modules offered in NAM and was able to reduce my annual support costs while simultaneously gaining more utility and APE's.
