Monitoring Web Sites in APM

We just purchased APM and we are a bit new to the product, but my company hosts hundreds of web applications for various companies around the world and we need to replicate our current tools capability to monitor web sites. I know APM has the HTTP and HTTP Form monitors and we have researched the Form Login monitor. It appears that it is limited to basic forms that have just a user and password field. We have looked at SEUM, and it is ideally what we need, but during the eval it was missing some core features and functions that we need before we could migrate or purchase. Is there something in APM that we are missing for web application monitoring or do we just have to wait for SEUM to mature?

SeUM is definitely the right solution for your requirements. The product is currently v1.0 so understandably there are areas where improvements could be made. Simple modifications to existing recordings, such as being able to add on to an existing recording, or delete the last 5of steps of a 15 step transaction and resume/append the recording from step 10 are some of the ideas we're currently investigating.

Your post is a bit vague as to what functionality is lacking in APM/SEUM. A lot can be done with custom scripts, but this may not be what you want either.

If you post up some specifics there are a few Solarwinds Staffers and Gurus that might be able to help you out a bit more.

We have hundreds of custom web sites and a pretty good percentage do not have a standard login form with just a username and password. So I am guessing that the HTTP Form Login component isn't extensible enough to accommodate multiple sets of input text boxes to process a login. Our current tool reads the HTML returned by the application and allows us to enter values into whatever input controls are present. I am not sure that scripting is a viable solution due to the quantity of monitors and overall supportability. We have entry level analyst that are not experienced with scripting that can maintain and support our current tool. As for SEUM, our biggest flaw we have with it is the inability to modify an existing recording to add or modify steps. Our applications and monitoring requirements change weekly for some of our apps. As I stated SEUM, is ultimately where we want to go for doing our web monitoring, we just need a little more flexibility in the modifying existing recordings. Hope this helps clarify things a bit.

The editing of existing recordings is the single biggest limitation keeping us from puchasing SeUM. If you get that in the product, it will go a long way!
