Hardware Health Monitoring on VM's

I just completed a brand new installation of NPM 10.3.1 and SAM 5.1.0 for a client and noticed Orion was reporting "Hardware health monitoring is in Undefined state." for about a dozen systems. These 12 systems are actually VM's. I spoke with the client to find out these systems(all of which were running Windows Server 2003) were converted P2V previously. Is this a possible bug in SAM that is turning on Hardware Health due to something ggleft from when the system was a physical box? I ran list resources and removed the Hardware Health option and all is clear now.

It's very likely not a bug, but rather the hardware vendor agent software is still installed and operating on these virtual machines. I would recommend to your client to uninstall Dell OpenManage, HP Insight Manager, or IBM Director agents from those virtual machines, as they're continuing to consume resources while providing no value.

Any progress with this issue? I am experiencing the same thing, except it says that on 2 of my ESXi hosts "Hardware health monitoring is in Undefined state ..". The odd part is, all 3 hosts are identical, and yet 2 have issues... I know that with vSphere 5.0 there were some issues with the CIM agent, but I can't remember what or why..

Any way, just curious to see if you fixed this yet.

Hey Bronx,

Thank you for the link. It was helpful, but did not resolve my particular issue. What it did do however, was remind me that Orion is polling the ESXi hosts using the CIM services.. which when I logged into vCenter, and clicked the Hardware tab for the two hosts having the issue, the hardware monitoring was unavailable... soooo opening a SSH connection and running this command:

/etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdog restart

... restarted one of the CIM agents and I was able to update the hardware status tab, and it displayed everything as needed.

Going back to Orion, it was able to poll the hosts and violla!
